Welcome to UoN Polo!
What is Polo?
Polo is a fast paced game on horses involving a 3 or 4 people team, hitting a ball, using mallets. The aim is to score as many goals as possible. A game is called a chukka and a match consists of around 4 chukkas, lasting between 6.5-7.5 minutes long depending on whether you are playing in arena or on grass.

I've ridden before. What does that mean for me?
You'll be put into beginner polo lessons with others who have ridden but are just starting to learn how to play polo too.

Do I need to have ridden before/ ridden a few times?
Not at all! You can join as a complete non-rider. Offchurch Bury Polo Club, our training club, will teach you from the very beginning. You'll learn how to ride, how to play polo and learn basic horsemanship skills too. A lot of our members had never ridden before joining UoN Polo Club!

What equipment do I need?
For your first polo lessons, you'll need to wear jeans or jodhpurs and shoes with a slight heel. If you have riding boots or a riding hat at home, bring them along! The club has knee pads, a helmet and mallets that you can borrow for the time being.

Will never having ridden before stop me getting into the top teams?
Absolutely Not! Provided you train enough and are committed to the sport, you will improve enormously. Our teams are selected by our coach, Grant, who you can talk to at any time. Our Club Captain, Zaid, is there for you to chat about teams with too.

The More Experienced Player
We enter a lower and upper intermediate team into tournaments. If we can't offer you a place in a team appropriate to your level, we will find you a place in another university team in the correct division for you.

What oppurtunities are there for me?
Loads! There are lessons for beginners, novices and intermediate level players where you will be playing with those of similar riding and polo ability. We have had UoN Polo Club members selected for the SUPA (Schools and Universities Polo Association) England Squad on two occasions this year, where they have played in Arizona, USA and Wicklow, Ireland. We also run really fun friendlies to get to know other universities and make excuses for more socials!

How much does polo cost?

Beginner lessons cost £50.
